Sports Stars Fishing Championship 2019

Sports Stars Fishing Championship 2019

16 August 2019

Tuesday, August 6th saw the annual Sports Stars Fishing Championship at Hampshire’s Gold Valley, where famous sporting stars swapped their football boots and boxing gloves for a fishing rod. It’s an event that every angler has written in capitals on their calendar!

The event aims to bring people together from various backgrounds over their shared interest in fishing. Some are avid anglers, but others have never picked up a fishing rod in their life. Background and skill level are irrelevant, as this event is centred on having fun with fishing and raising money for charity. Each contestant is split into a team of four with one manager. They compete over two 2-hour sessions to win the sought-after team and singles titles.

To name a few, this year’s contestants included former World snooker champion Steve Davis OBE, former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman, former England rugby union star Micky Skinner and Harris Sportsmail’s very own professional angler Steve Collett. Unfortunately, this year the rules of the competition were changed slightly, with the announcement that professional anglers aren’t allowed to win the title anymore. This meant that sadly Steve wasn’t able to defend his title as reigning champion for a second year in a row. However, even though Steve wasn’t able to score a fishing hattrick, it gave the competition a nice edge and meant that other sporting stars were in with a better chance at winning.

So far, the event has raised £21,000 and this year’s total is still yet to be announced. The organiser, Jess Harding, has set a ‘lifetime’ charity target of £1,000,000 and says that “even if I have to live until 90 to do so, I want to achieve something really worthwhile.”

If you didn’t manage to come along to the event, it will be televised in the UK on ITV4 on August 29th and 30th and in 32 other countries, so make sure you tune in and don’t miss out on the action!
