Ecogear and the Creation of Rock Fishing

Ecogear and the Creation of Rock Fishing

21 February 2018

This time we are highlighting another great brand: Ecogear!

As you may or may not know, Ecogear helped to establish “Iso Tsuri”, also known as Rock Fishing, in Japan over two decades ago. This adrenaline-fuelled and challenging fishing technique is now taking anglers across Europe and Australia by storm.

What is Rock Fishing?

Rock fishing means that instead of fishing from the beach or boat, you fish from rocky outcrops on the shore. This allows you to get to deeper waters than you would from a beach. There are two different forms, LRF (Light Rock Fishing) and HRF (Hard Rock Fishing). LRF is a type of lure fishing aimed at catching mini-species such as small pollack, blenny, goby, and garfish, using light, sensitive tackle and tiny weights usually no more than 7 grams - ideal for urban fishing. HRF is more coastal, with a rocky, weedy terrain and usually some swell and surf involved. This requires studier lines and heavier baits.

*A word of caution if you’re planning to go Rock fishing: don’t go alone, and be sure to wear a life jacket at all times. As exciting as this form of fishing is, it can be pretty risky!*

Ecogear and Rock Fishing

Having helped create and popularise this new way of fishing, Ecogear created tackle that suits it perfectly. Their unique set of hard and soft baits are designed with rock fishing in mind, so you don’t have to worry about pushing these to the extreme – they’ll be able to handle it!

Despite their Japanese heritage and designs, Ecogear’s soft and hard baits have been tailored to suit European fish, making them perfect for any that feed close to the shore.

So what will you need to go rock fishing?

Ecogear Shirasu Fine Jig Heads

Ecogear Shirasu Fine Jig Heads

We recommend these fine wire jig heads; not only do they come in a great range of weights from 0.6g (1/48oz) to 2.3g (5/64oz), they have extra sharp hooks with micro barbs to provide you with the ‘Ultimate Hooking’ experience. With a high level of stability and straightness in the water, these are a great place to start your rock fishing rig.

Ecogear Para Max

Once you have the ideal jig head, you’ll need something to rig it with. These Para Max are a great option because they offer a unique, eel-like motion in the water due to their specially designed 3D wings. With so many different ways to rig these soft baits, they’re ideal for a wide range of techniques.

Ecogear BTS

Ecogear BTS

This is a truly appealing soft bait, offering a combination of a realistic fish shape and a heavy tail. This means the lure makes a lot of resonation in the water as it slowly wobbles. The strong tail is crafted in a balanced way to handle both fast and soft retrievals - making sure you never miss a bite. This lure is an ideal choice for rock fishing, as it can reach places traditional hard lures can’t easily.

These are just a few of our favourites from our wide range of Ecogear tackle (see their full range here). If you have any questions about rock fishing, or fishing of any kind, contact us – we’ll be happy to help!
